A Brief History of Muskogee
Muskogee was born a railroad town like most towns of the great American West, but its roots run much deeper than the rails that were laid across the prairie. The city’s history reaches back to the Native Americans who inhabited the region around three rivers, the Arkansas, Grand, and Verdigris, which meet just north of the city.
When President Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the Five Civilized Tribes were relocated from their homes in the south to Indian Territory through the Trail of Tears. Of the five tribes, the Cherokee and Creek tribes established settlements near Muskogee, with the town being incorporated into both Indian Nations.
On January 1, 1872, tracklayers reached a point a few miles south of the three rivers, and Muskogee was born. The U.S. made Muskogee the seat of government in Indian Territory, with a federal court and Union Agency to the Five Tribes. By the time Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907, Muskogee was the second-largest town in Indian Territory, and within a decade the community had ten buildings of more than five stories.
Charles N. Haskell, an Ohio native, helped establish the city as a major economic hub in eastern Oklahoma in the early 20th century. He envisioned Muskogee as the “Queen City of the Southwest,” and much of the brick-paved downtown he helped build still stands today, giving the city a character and charm that is entirely its own.

Bacone College, one of Oklahoma’s oldest institutions of higher learning, calls Muskogee home, and the city’s schools and community programs reflect a genuine investment in the next generation. Whether you have lived here your whole life or just moved to the area, Muskogee has a welcoming, small-city feel that keeps people rooted.
